The Scepter of Passion

By the poet: Mustafa Youssef Al-Qashlan

Ah, woman, scepter of my mind,

Crown of my heart, my soul, and love,

You set the air within my heart aflame,

Until a volcano rose, tearing through my body.

Ah, woman, you who melted

The skin from the flesh, and kindled

Within my soul a fire that never fades,

Making even the devil bow

Upon the earth, beyond the reach of heaven’s punishment,

Not even escaping the fire of passion within the body.

I have grown weary of life, and the anguish of my heart

Tears me apart; the longing of eye for eye

Consumes me. For love is made of words,

And you are its poetry, a poem of thoughts,

And reflections that reveal the meaning of love.

O you who have exhausted the limits of love and passion,

I traced letters that began to paint

The spring of passion upon life.

I forgot my sorrows until love dissolved me,

Leaving me upon this earth without soul or body.

O woman of the heart’s longing and sleepless nights,

Of the soul’s passion and yearning, be peace

To the love of the heart and the words of love,

Until the soul’s longing is extinguished.
